Hail and dent repair for Calgary.

The shop is in Calgary, so this is the one place where you are not driving out of town to get the work done.

What We See In Calgary

Storms here are their own thing.

Calgary sits in the middle of Alberta's hail alley and takes more damaging hail than any other major Canadian city. Storms here are extremely local: one community gets shredded while the next one over stays dry. That is why a neighbour's estimate tells you nothing about yours, and why we scan every panel rather than pricing off a storm date.

This page covers hail. If you are here for a single door ding or a crease rather than storm damage, the pricing and the process are different, and they are laid out on our Calgary dent repair page.

The Record

What hail has actually done around Calgary.

Calgary has taken two separate billion-dollar hailstorms in five years, and they did not hit the same part of town. On 5 August 2024 a storm crossed the city between 7:45 and 8:30 in the evening and produced C$3.25 billion in insured losses and more than 130,000 claims, making it the second-costliest disaster in Canadian history. Four years earlier, on 13 June 2020, the damage core was a 10 to 15 square kilometre pocket of northeast Calgary, hit inside 10 to 15 minutes, with hail up to tennis-ball size falling at 80 to 100 km/h.

That is the single most useful thing to know about hail here. Two storms, both records, both landing somewhere different. Your street's history tells you very little about your car, which is why we scan every panel instead of pricing off a storm date.

The 2024 numbers are measured rather than guessed. The Northern Hail Project runs 20 hail disdrometers inside Calgary city limits, and ten of them were struck that evening, recording a large amount of 30 mm hail.

The Panels

Where the dents actually land here.

Hail falls close to vertical when the wind is light, which is why the hood, the roof and the trunk lid carry most of the damage on nearly every car we scan. Add wind and the pattern changes. Stones come in at an angle and start working the windward doors, the mirror caps and the A-pillars, and both of Calgary's record storms crossed the city from the west, so a car parked facing into one took door and fender damage a quick walk-around misses entirely. The other thing a Calgary car tends to have is layers. Two billion-dollar storms in five years means a lot of vehicles in this city are carrying dents from more than one event, and an adjuster who can see old damage on a new claim is entitled to pay less on it. The scan separates what is fresh from what has been there since 2020, in writing, before anybody else gets to decide.

The Calendar

When Calgary gets it, and the warning you get.

Damaging hail here concentrates from roughly mid-June into early September, and the daily window is far narrower than the seasonal one. Cells build over the foothills through the afternoon and arrive late afternoon or early evening, which is why so much of the damage in this city happens to cars sitting in office and shopping-centre lots rather than in driveways overnight. Calgary's one advantage over every town on this list is that it actually has covered parking, and covered parking is the only protection that reliably works. A parkade downtown, a covered stall at a condo, a garage currently full of storage. On a warning afternoon in July that is worth rearranging an evening for. What is never worth it is walking outside mid-storm to fit a cover: the 13 June 2020 storm dropped hail up to tennis-ball size at 80 to 100 km/h. A dent costs money. Those stones can genuinely hurt you.

The Money

Write-offs, deductibles and who decides.

The question we field most in Calgary is whether a car is about to be written off, and it is usually asked by somebody whose neighbour's was. You cannot tell from their car. A write-off is a cost decision rather than a safety one: the insurer weighs the repair estimate against what the vehicle is actually worth and calls a total loss when the repair costs more than the car does. Paintless repair changes that arithmetic directly, because it takes out the panel replacement, the sanding, the filler and the repaint that push a conventional hail estimate over the line. On a Calgary car carrying dents from two different storms the older damage is part of that number too, which is one more reason not to ride a claim through a second season.

Two things decide a Calgary claim and neither of them is the storm. The first is the date of loss. Your insurer wants one, and with two major storms in recent memory plus smaller cells every summer, plenty of people genuinely cannot say which one did it. Hail does not heal, so earlier damage is still claimable; we document what is on the panels and let the adjuster place the date. The second is pressure about where the work goes. Calgary has more dealerships and more body shops than anywhere else in the province, and they, plus your insurer's preferred network, will all happily recommend. In Alberta the choice is yours. A preferred network is a commercial arrangement between a shop and an insurer, not a rule that binds you, and nobody needs your signature at a folding table to prove it.

Calgary Questions

What Calgary drivers actually ask.

My neighbour's car was written off. Is mine going to be?

Probably not, and you cannot tell from their car. Calgary hail is extremely local, and the two billion-dollar storms of the last five years landed on different parts of the city. Panel depth, dent count and whether the metal stretched all decide it, and none of those are visible from across the street. The scan gives you the actual answer in about thirty minutes.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

You bring it in. The shop is at Unit 5, 5915 40 St SE, and the reason we do not chase this work around parking lots is light. Reading hail needs a reflection board and a controlled bay, and a technician crouching in a driveway misses dents that a board shows instantly. Missed dents mean a short estimate, and a short estimate is your money.

I do not know which storm did it. Does that matter?

Not for the repair. It can matter for the claim, because your insurer will ask for a date of loss. If you are unsure, the two big ones were 5 August 2024 and 13 June 2020, and hail damage does not heal, so older damage is still claimable. We document what is on the car and let the adjuster place the date.

Will claiming hail damage put my premium up?

Hail is a comprehensive claim rather than an at-fault one, so it does not carry the rate consequence a collision does. That is not the same as saying it is invisible, because comprehensive claim history can still factor into what an insurer quotes you at renewal. What is certain is that an unrepaired car costs you at resale and on the next claim, so the comparison is never premium against nothing.

Can I keep the money and skip the repair?

You can, and in this city it is a bad bet specifically because of how often it hails. If a second storm lands on damage an adjuster can already see, the older dents get treated as pre-existing and the new claim pays less. Calgary has produced two billion-dollar storms in five years. Starting each season factory-straight is what keeps every future claim clean.

Which panels should I photograph before I come in?

Hood, roof and trunk lid first, then the doors and mirror caps on whichever side was facing the weather. Shoot low, with the light running across the panel rather than straight down it. Overhead midday sun hides hail, which is why damage seems to appear days later when it was always there. You do not need good photos to get a scan, they just make the conversation faster.
