What We See In Airdrie
Storms here are their own thing.
Airdrie has grown fast, which means a lot of newer vehicles parked in driveways and open condo lots rather than garages. When a cell tracks north up the QEII, Airdrie frequently takes the same storm Calgary took twenty minutes earlier. If your street got hit, your neighbours almost certainly did too, and shops fill up fast after a north-track storm.
The QEII makes this an easy decision for Airdrie. One highway, one drop-off, and the repair happens on a bench under a reflection board rather than in a hotel car park behind a storm-chasing crew that will be in Saskatchewan by September. Airdrie has seen plenty of those after a bad summer. A lifetime warranty is only worth anything if the shop is still at the same address to honour it.

The Record
What hail has actually done around Airdrie.
Airdrie is the only place outside Calgary with a hail monitoring station. The Northern Hail Project, run out of Olds by Western University, has 20 disdrometers inside Calgary and exactly one beyond the city limits, and it sits in Airdrie. Researchers put instruments where the hail is.
The record backs that up. When the 13 June 2020 storm caused more than C$1.2 billion in insured damage and became Canada's fourth-costliest natural disaster, Airdrie was named among the hardest-hit areas alongside northeast Calgary and Rocky View County. That storm damaged at least 70,000 homes and vehicles.
Airdrie also sits on the northern leg of Hailstorm Alley, the corridor running from High River north through Calgary toward Red Deer, which sees more than 40 hailstorms in a typical summer.
Loss and claim figures: Insurance Bureau of Canada, quoting CatIQ, 12 February 2025. Storm timing, swath and hail sizes: Northern Hail Project, Western University, August 2024. Hailstorm Alley frequency: CBC News, 2020. Full record and sources on our Calgary hail history page.
The Panels
Where the dents actually land here.
When a cell tracks north out of Calgary up the QEII corridor it arrives here with wind behind it, and wind-driven hail does not behave like the textbook picture. Instead of landing flat on the hood and the roof it comes in at an angle and works the south and west faces of the vehicle, which on one car is the driver's door and on the car beside it is the passenger side. Airdrie's open condo lots and driveways mean vehicles are parked in whatever direction they happened to arrive in, so two cars in the same lot genuinely carry different damage maps. It matters for the estimate because dents on doors and quarter panels sit in body lines and near panel edges, which is slower and more skilled work than a flat hood. That is work worth documenting properly rather than counting from across a parking lot.
The Calendar
When Airdrie gets it, and the warning you get.
Airdrie's hail calendar tracks Calgary's with a delay measured in minutes rather than days. A cell that hits the north of the city and keeps going is frequently overhead here inside half an hour, which is why the two places turn up in the same storm report so often. The 13 June 2020 event named Airdrie among the hardest-hit areas alongside northeast Calgary and Rocky View County. What has changed since then is how much vehicle sits outdoors. Airdrie grew fast, and fast growth means newer homes with driveways and condo lots rather than the deep detached garages older neighbourhoods have. A warning that gives Calgary twenty minutes gives you thirty, and thirty minutes is enough to move a car under cover provided you already know where the cover is. That is a decision to make in July, not during the storm.
The Money
Write-offs, deductibles and who decides.
Airdrie's newer vehicle stock changes this conversation in a specific way, because a lot of what is parked here is financed or leased and that puts a third party in the decision. A total-loss payout goes to the lender before it reaches you, so if the vehicle is worth less than the loan you cover the gap yourself unless you carry protection for exactly that. On a lease, hail runs into the wear-and-tear clause at return instead, which turns damage you never fixed into a bill at the end of the term rather than a claim during it. Paintless repair is worth more here than almost anywhere for one reason: keeping the factory paint keeps the car off the repainted-panel list that a lease inspector and a dealer appraiser both look for.
What actually decides an Airdrie outcome is when you call. A storm that tracks north puts Airdrie and north Calgary into the same claim queue in the same week, and repair capacity does not scale to a storm. There is a fixed number of technicians in this region, paintless work is hand work one dent at a time, and calendars fill in the order people booked. Then there are the crews. After a bad Alberta summer, travelling hail teams set up in hotel lots along the QEII and push drivers to commit on the spot. In Alberta you choose who repairs your vehicle and no signature at a folding table changes that, so take the paperwork home. A lifetime warranty is a promise from a company at an address, and it is worth nothing if the company left the province in September.
Airdrie Questions
What Airdrie drivers actually ask.
Is it actually worth driving to Calgary for this?
That is your call to make after the estimate, not before it, which is why the scan is free and takes half an hour. What we would say is that the QEII and Deerfoot is one highway most of the way, and a hail repair is one drop-off rather than a weekly commitment. Airdrie drivers make up a real share of our bay in a bad season.
There is a hail monitoring station in Airdrie. Does that help my claim?
Not directly, but it tells you something. The Northern Hail Project runs twenty disdrometers inside Calgary and exactly one outside the city, and it is in Airdrie. Researchers put instruments where the hail is. Your claim still rests on what is on your panels, which is what the scan documents.
Airdrie got hit hard in 2020. Can old damage still be repaired?
Yes. Hail dents do not settle or fade, and paintless repair works the same on a four-year-old dent as a four-day-old one as long as the paint was never broken. Airdrie was named among the hardest-hit areas in the 13 June 2020 storm, and we still see cars carrying it.
My car is leased. Do I have to fix the hail damage?
Not immediately, but it does not go away either. Hail comes up against the wear-and-tear clause when you hand the vehicle back, so unrepaired damage becomes a charge at the end of the term rather than a claim during it. Repairing it while it is still a covered loss is almost always the cheaper order to do things in. Bring the lease terms if you have them and we will work to them.
How fast do I need to book after a storm tracks north?
Within the week if you can. Airdrie and north Calgary file into the same queue after a north-track storm, and slots go in booking order because there is a fixed number of technicians in the region. The repair itself is measured in days once your car is in the bay. It is the line in front of it that stretches, and that line forms in the first seven days.
Do you deal with my insurer, or do I?
We do. That is the part people most want off their plate: the documentation, the estimate in the format an adjuster expects, the supplement if the scan finds more than the first look did, and the follow-up when a file goes quiet. You stay the decision-maker throughout, because it is your policy and your vehicle. You just do not have to chase it.
