Does Filing a Hail Claim Raise Your Insurance in Alberta?

The honest answer for Alberta drivers: hail is comprehensive, not at-fault, and a single claim usually does not raise your rate. Here is how it actually works.

It is the number one question we hear at the shop, usually before the customer has even shown us the hood: "If I file this claim, are my rates going to jump?"

Fair question. Nobody wants to trade a dented roof for a bigger bill every month for the next five years. So here is the straight answer for Alberta drivers, with no sales pitch attached.

Hail is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim

In Alberta, hail damage falls under the comprehensive portion of your auto policy. Comprehensive covers things that happen to your vehicle that you had no control over: hail, falling tree branches, theft, a cracked windshield from a rock on Deerfoot.

That distinction matters, because comprehensive claims are treated very differently than collision claims:

  • There is no at-fault rating. You did not cause the storm. Insurers know that.
  • It does not touch your driving record. A hail claim is not a driving incident.
  • Insurers fully expect them here. Calgary sits at the heart of Hailstorm Alley, the corridor running roughly from High River up through Calgary and Airdrie to Red Deer. Hail claims from this region are priced into the system already.

So will your premium actually go up?

The honest answer: a single hail claim, on its own, usually does not raise your rate the way an at-fault collision does. Most Alberta insurers do not surcharge one comprehensive claim.

Two honest caveats, because we would rather you hear them from us:

Caveat one: regional pricing moves for everyone. After a monster storm year, insurers often adjust rates across an entire area. The August 2024 Calgary hailstorm caused close to three billion dollars in insured damage, one of the costliest disasters in Canadian history. After events like that, rates in hail-prone postal codes can drift upward whether you filed a claim or not. Which points to a blunt truth: skipping your claim does not protect you from that increase. You just end up paying it anyway while driving a dented vehicle.

Caveat two: frequency can matter. Several comprehensive claims inside a short window can affect how some insurers rate you at renewal, or the deductible they offer you. If you have filed multiple claims recently, it is worth a quick conversation with your broker first. We will happily help you think it through once you have your number.

The math most people never run

Say your vehicle took a typical Calgary beating: dents across the hood, roof, and both driver-side panels. Repairs like that commonly land between five and fifteen thousand dollars. You can see roughly where your own car sits with the 3-minute estimate.

Now weigh that against the fear: a possible rate bump of a few hundred dollars a year that, for a single comprehensive claim, usually does not happen at all. Eating a five-figure repair to dodge a maybe is not caution. It is just an expensive dented car.

And unrepaired hail damage keeps costing you. It can knock thousands off your resale or trade-in value, and if a second storm hits, your insurer may treat the old damage as pre-existing and carve it out of the new claim.

What about the deductible?

Here is the part most Calgary drivers do not know. Paintless dent repair costs your insurer far less than a full replace-and-respray job, which is exactly why insurers favour it. It also keeps your factory paint on the car. You are responsible for your deductible on the claim, and we confirm exactly where you stand, in plain English, before any work starts. We handle the entire claim and paperwork for you. For the full walkthrough, see how hail insurance claims work in Alberta.

The bottom line

  • Hail is a comprehensive claim. Not at-fault, not on your driving record.
  • One hail claim usually does not raise your rate. Big storms raise regional rates for everyone, claim or no claim.
  • You pay your deductible on the claim. We confirm exactly where you stand up front, and we handle all the paperwork.
  • We work with all insurance companies and handle the claim start to finish: photos, paperwork, follow-up calls, all of it.

If your vehicle got hammered, do not sit on it out of rate fear. Get the real numbers first, then decide. Answer a few questions and see your repair range with the 3-minute estimate. Quick answers

Is a hail claim an at-fault claim in Alberta?
No. Hail falls under comprehensive coverage because you did not cause the storm. It is not rated as at-fault and it does not touch your driving record.
Will one hail claim raise my premium?
Usually not the way an at-fault collision does. Most Alberta insurers do not surcharge a single comprehensive claim. Big storm years can move regional rates for everyone, filed or not.
Should I skip the claim to protect my rate?
Rarely worth it. Skipping the claim does not shield you from regional rate moves, and you are left driving a dented car that loses resale value. Get your number first, then decide.
