Chestermere, Alberta

Hail and dent repair for Chestermere.

Chestermere is the closest of the surrounding towns to the shop, and it sits east where prairie cells arrive with little warning.

What We See In Chestermere

Storms here are their own thing.

Chestermere is our shortest run outside Calgary, which matters more than it sounds when you are arranging a drop-off around work. Storms tracking east across open prairie tend to arrive with less warning here than they do in the city, and there is a lot of open-lot and driveway parking around the lake. Most of the housing here went up recently and was built with driveways rather than deep garages, so the vehicle that takes the hail is usually the newer one. It is also a commuter town, which means a lot of cars are sitting in Calgary lots during the working day and catching the storm there instead, then carrying the damage home. Either way the dents arrive in Chestermere.

Twenty-odd minutes is short enough that this stops being a trip and starts being a detour on the way into the city. That is the practical argument for Chestermere: you are passing anyway. The car gets worked on a bench under a reflection board in Ogden, by a shop at a fixed address, which is worth more than a mobile unit that comes to the lake once and then cannot be found.

The Record

What hail has actually done around Chestermere.

Chestermere is east of Calgary, and east is the direction these storms leave in. The 5 August 2024 hail swath was more than 120 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide, tracking eastward after forming west of the city. A storm does not stop at the city limit.

Rocky View County, which surrounds Chestermere, was named among the hardest-hit areas in the 13 June 2020 storm, alongside northeast Calgary and Airdrie. That event caused more than C$1.2 billion in insured losses and damaged at least 70,000 homes and vehicles.

Chestermere also has a lot of open-lot and driveway parking around the lake and very little covered parking, which is the practical difference between a written-off hood and a scratch.

The Panels

Where the dents actually land here.

Chestermere takes its hail in two different ways and they leave different marks. A storm that has already crossed Calgary arrives here organised and moving east, which is the 5 August 2024 pattern: a swath more than 120 kilometres long and 12 wide does not stop at a city limit, and by the time it reaches the lake the stones have real horizontal speed behind them. That puts damage on windward doors and mirror caps rather than only on the hood. The other way is the car that never took a storm in Chestermere at all. This is a commuter town, so a large share of the vehicles here spend the working day in Calgary lots and catch the hail there, then drive home carrying it. Which is why a Chestermere driver often has no memory of a storm whatsoever and finds the dents a fortnight later in the right light.

The Calendar

When Chestermere gets it, and the warning you get.

East is the direction these storms leave in, and that gives Chestermere a shorter warning than the distance suggests. A cell that shows up on a Calgary radar loop is already most of the way here. What makes that expensive rather than merely inconvenient is the parking. Most of the housing around the lake went up recently and was built with driveways rather than deep garages, and there is very little covered parking anywhere in town, so the vehicle taking the hail is usually the newest one on the property. Boats and trailers take it as well, and those usually sit on a different policy, which is worth checking rather than assuming. Between mid-June and early September the habit that pays here is simply knowing the one covered spot you can reach in ten minutes, because ten minutes is roughly what an eastbound cell gives you once it is visible over the city.

The Money

Write-offs, deductibles and who decides.

Chestermere's particular risk is accumulation. Open-lot parking with no cover means a vehicle here can take hail in consecutive seasons, and that is where this conversation actually starts for most people. If you claimed, banked the cheque and never repaired the car, the next storm lands on damage an adjuster can already see. The older dents get treated as pre-existing and the new claim pays less, while the repair estimate that finally arrives is being weighed against a vehicle whose value the unrepaired damage already lowered. Two seasons of that is how an otherwise sound car ends up called a total loss on hail alone. It is also the easiest thing on this page to avoid. Fix the first one and start the next season factory-straight.

Two things come up on Chestermere claims. The first is geography. If the car was in a Calgary lot when the hail fell then the loss happened in Calgary, and your address out here changes nothing, because the policy follows the vehicle rather than the postcode. People ask, so it is worth saying. The second is steering. Chestermere drivers pass a great many Calgary dealerships and body shops on the commute, and all of them, plus your insurer's preferred network, will happily point you somewhere. In Alberta that choice is yours to make. What we would ask is only that you compare like with like, because a paintless quote and a conventional quote are not the same repair: one keeps the factory paint on the car and the other sands it off and sprays a new one on.

Chestermere Questions

What Chestermere drivers actually ask.

How long is the drive, honestly?

It is our shortest run outside Calgary, roughly twenty to thirty minutes depending on the hour, on Highway 1 and then down Stoney or Deerfoot. We hedge that deliberately rather than promise a number, because commuter traffic on the Trans-Canada is the variable and we are not the ones sitting in it.

A storm hit Calgary but stopped at the city limit. Did it?

Almost certainly not. The 5 August 2024 hail swath was more than a hundred and twenty kilometres long and twelve wide, and it was travelling east, which is the direction Chestermere is in. Rocky View County, which surrounds the town, was named among the hardest-hit areas in the 2020 storm as well.

Can I drop the car off before work?

That is the usual arrangement for Chestermere, and it is the practical reason the short drive matters. You are coming through on the way into the city anyway. Tell us when you are arriving and the scan is done and in writing before the morning is out.

The car was parked in Calgary when it got hit. Does that change my claim?

No. Your policy follows the vehicle, not your address, so a car damaged in a downtown lot is the same claim as one damaged in your driveway in Kinniburgh. All the adjuster needs is a date of loss and documentation of what is on the panels. Where you were standing at the time is not part of it.

I never noticed a storm. Can this really be hail?

Very often, yes, and it is common here for exactly the commuter reason. Hail is hardest to see in overhead midday light and easiest in low, angled light, which is why it seems to appear weeks later on a car that was damaged the whole time. The pattern itself is diagnostic: hail leaves clusters on upward-facing panels, which is not what a parking-lot knock looks like.

Is my boat or trailer covered too?

Usually under a different policy than the car, and that catches people out around the lake. Worth checking with your broker rather than assuming either way. We can look at metal panels on a trailer and tell you honestly whether paintless work is the right tool, but the coverage question is one for whoever wrote the policy.
