Rental Car During Hail Repair in Alberta

Does insurance pay for a rental while hail damage is repaired? How Alberta's SEF 20 loss of use works, when it starts and stops, and how to plan drop-off.

Your insurer pays for a rental during hail repair only if your policy carries SEF 20, Alberta's loss of use endorsement. It reimburses a rental car, taxis or public transit, up to daily and per-claim limits set on your policy. If your car still drives, the clock starts when you drop it off for repair and stops when the repair is done. Without SEF 20, you pay for the rental yourself.

The short answer: SEF 20 decides it

Hail is claimed under the part of your policy that covers damage to your own car: comprehensive (or all perils), not collision. That pays for the repair. It does not, by itself, pay for the car you drive while yours is in the shop.

That is a separate endorsement, AB-SEF 20 (Loss of Use). Here is what the standard Alberta form says:

  • What it pays for. When your loss is covered under your policy's own-damage section, the insurer reimburses the expense you reasonably incur to rent a substitute car, including taxis or public transportation.
  • How much. Up to a per-day amount and a per-occurrence total. Both are blank on the standard form and set on your policy.
  • When it starts and stops. Covered below, because this is where most people lose money.
  • Only for a covered loss. SEF 20 pays when the damage itself is covered under your policy. If you carry liability only, hail damage to your own car is not covered, and the endorsement has nothing to attach to.
  • Conditions. It only pays when the claim is large enough that the insurer is paying on the damage itself, and other conditions on your policy apply. Check both with your broker before you book a rental.

Notice the word reimburses. You generally pay first and claim it back, which is why receipts matter.

When the rental clock starts

The form gives two start points:

  • If your car cannot move under its own power after the loss, reimbursement starts when the loss occurs.
  • In every other case, it starts when the car is delivered for repair.

If your car still drives after the storm, you are in the second case. The clock does not start on storm day. It starts on drop-off day.

That catches people out. They rent a car the morning after the storm, while their own sits in the driveway waiting for an appraisal or a repair slot. Under the form's wording, those days are not part of the reimbursement.

If you are not sure which case you are in (a shattered windshield, say, or a car you do not feel safe driving), ask your adjuster before you book a rental, and get the answer in writing.

Then look at the other end.

When it stops

Reimbursement ends at whichever of these comes first:

  • The repair or replacement is complete.
  • The insurer makes or offers a settlement.

On a repaired car, that means the coverage ends when the work is done, not when you get around to collecting it. Pick the car up promptly and return the rental the same day.

On a write-off, there is no repair to finish, so the settlement offer is usually the end point. Line up your next vehicle before that offer arrives. What to do in the rest of that week is in our checklist for when your car was totaled by hail.

Knowing both ends, you can plan the middle.

Plan the drop-off so the rental lines up

Most of the value in SEF 20 comes from timing. A few steps make the rental match the repair:

  1. Get the damage assessed first. Alberta's statutory conditions say no repairs beyond those needed to protect the car until the insurer has had a reasonable chance to inspect, or gives written consent. So the repair date follows the insurer's look, not the other way round.
  2. Ask for an expected in-shop window before you drop the car off. It depends on the dent count, the panels, the paint and anything that has to be ordered. Our post on how long hail repair takes explains what moves it.
  3. Book the rental for drop-off day, not storm day.
  4. Check the daily limit against the rental rate. If the car you want costs more per day than your policy allows, the difference is yours. A smaller car, or transit for part of the time, can keep you inside the limit.
  5. Keep every receipt, including taxis and transit, and send them in together.

Small mismatches add up fast at a rental counter. Ten minutes of planning closes them.

Taxis and transit count too

This part of the wording gets overlooked. SEF 20 covers taxis and public transportation as well as a substitute car.

If you work downtown and the car mostly sits in a parkade all day, transit for the repair window may suit you better than a rental. If you need a car for one errand, a taxi receipt can do the job. Either way, the same daily and per-claim limits apply, and a receipt is what turns the trip into a reimbursement.

"Reasonably incurred" is doing some work

The form reimburses expense reasonably incurred. That word is there for a reason.

If your daily driver is a compact and you are tempted by a pickup or a luxury SUV for the week, ask your adjuster first. The same goes for a rental that runs well past the repair window, or a taxi bill that looks more like a road trip than a commute. None of this means the insurer will refuse. It means a quick question before you book costs nothing, and an argument after you return the keys can cost plenty.

When in doubt, choose the rental closest to what you normally drive, and keep it for exactly the days the car is in the shop.

If you do not have SEF 20

Then the rental is your cost, and it is worth planning around:

  • Ask for the expected repair window before you commit to anything, and book the drop-off for a stretch when you need the car least.
  • Line up the alternatives: a second household car, a lift, transit, or working from home for part of the time.
  • Ask your broker about SEF 20 for next season. The Insurance Bureau of Canada says Alberta has had at least one major hailstorm every year for two decades. The next one is a matter of when.

The full claim process, start to finish, is in our guide to how an Alberta hail insurance claim works.

Questions for your adjuster

Before you pick up a set of rental keys, get answers to these:

  • Do I have SEF 20, and what are my daily and per-claim limits?
  • In my case, does reimbursement start at the loss or at drop-off?
  • What do you need from me to reimburse it, and where do I send it?
  • Are there any other conditions on my policy I should know about?

Five minutes on the phone, and you will not be surprised by a rental bill later.

Your next step: get the repair scoped, then book the car

The rental only lines up if you know roughly how big the job is. Book a free 30-minute scan at the shop, Unit 5, 5915 40 St SE, Calgary, or send a few photos taken at a low angle with light running across the panels. You will know the scope of the damage before you set a drop-off date or reserve a rental.

Quick answers

Does comprehensive coverage include a rental car for hail repair in Alberta?
Not on its own. Rental reimbursement comes from a separate endorsement, AB-SEF 20 (loss of use). If it is not listed on your policy, the rental is your cost.
How much will SEF 20 pay per day for a rental?
The standard Alberta form leaves both the daily amount and the total per claim blank. Your policy fills them in, so check your own documents or ask your broker before you choose a car at the rental counter.
Can I claim taxis or transit instead of a rental car?
Yes. The SEF 20 wording includes taxis and public transportation as well as a substitute car, within the same limits. Keep every receipt.
My car still drives after the hail. Can I rent a car the day after the storm?
You can, but under the SEF 20 wording a car that can still move under its own power is covered from the day it is delivered for repair, not from the storm. Days before the drop-off are generally yours to pay for.
What happens to my rental coverage if the car is written off?
It ends when the insurer makes or offers a settlement, if that comes first. On a total loss that offer is usually the end point, so plan your next vehicle before it arrives.
