In general, yes. When a dent has been fully worked out with paintless dent repair, the metal stays where the technician put it. When a dent seems to "come back", the usual explanation is a repair that was never fully finished, or new damage in the same spot. Neither one is the metal changing its mind.
The short answer: what "permanent" means for PDR
Paintless dent repair moves the metal itself back to its original shape. It does not cover the dent, fill it or paint over it. That is the whole reason it holds up.
Here is what that means in practice:
- Nothing is added to the panel. There is no filler and no new paint, so there is nothing on the panel that can age differently from the rest of it.
- The factory paint stays on. The finish that left the factory is the finish you drive away with, and it keeps doing the job it always did.
- A finished repair reads straight under light. When a technician is done, the reflection on the panel runs straight across where the dent was.
So the honest version of "is it permanent" is this: a finished repair stays finished. The two things that can go wrong are a repair that was not finished, and a new dent. Neither is a flaw in the method, and both have a clear fix: the first is the shop's to put right, and the second is a new repair. The rest of this post is how to tell those apart, and what to do about each.
Why worked metal stays put
A dent is metal pushed into a new shape by an impact. Paintless dent repair pushes it back, in many small steps, until the panel is flat again. We walk through each of those steps in how paintless dent repair works.
Once the metal is back in its original shape, nothing is pulling it anywhere else. In general, a properly finished panel just sits there being a panel. There is no layer underneath that can shrink, and no layer on top that can lift.
Compare that with a conventional body shop repair. Filler goes into the low spot, gets sanded level, then primed and painted. Done well, that can last too. But the panel now carries an added layer and a refinished surface, and it shows up as different to anyone who measures it. With PDR, a paint-depth gauge reads original thickness, because the paint is original.
If the metal is not the problem, the next question is why some people swear their dent came back.
Why a dent can seem to come back
There are four common explanations, and only one of them is a repair problem.
1. It was never fully finished
A dent can look gone in flat daylight and still have a shallow low spot, or a faint raised ring, that shows under different light. That is not a dent returning. It was there at pickup, and the light at home finally caught it.
This is exactly what a warranty is for, and it is why a careful check at pickup matters (more on that below).
2. It is a new dent in the same place
Hail lands on the same horizontal panels every storm. A parking lot door lands on the same door edge every time someone parks too close. A fresh dent in a familiar spot is easy to mistake for an old one.
A new dent usually has its own sharp centre and its own fresh look. If you have before and after photos from the repair, compare them.
3. The light changed
Washed and waxed paint, wet panels, low winter sun and a new parking spot under different lights all show small imperfections that were invisible in summer. The metal has not moved. You are seeing it in a light you had not seen it in before.
4. The paint was damaged and left alone
PDR does not repair chipped or cracked paint. If a spot had broken paint and was never refinished, that spot can change over time. That is a paint problem, not the dent returning, and it is worth a look before winter.
Whichever one you suspect, the next step is the same: look at it properly before you assume anything.
How to check a repair before you drive away
The best time to catch an unfinished spot is at pickup, while you are still standing at the shop.
- Look along the panel, not at it. Crouch so your eye is close to the level of the surface and look across where the dent was.
- Find a straight reflection. A ceiling light or a roofline reflected in the panel should stay straight as you move your head. A wobble means the metal is not flat.
- Check the hard places. Body lines, panel edges and the area near trim are where finishing is most demanding.
- Ask for the paperwork. A written list of what was repaired, panel by panel, is your reference if a question comes up later.
If something looks off, say so on the spot. A good shop would much rather hear it at pickup than six months later.
What the warranty is for
A warranty on paintless dent repair exists for the first explanation above: a repair that turns out not to be fully finished, or a workmanship problem on a repaired panel.
It is not there for new damage. A new hailstorm or a new door ding is a new repair. If it is storm damage, it is a new claim, and hail is claimed under comprehensive (or all perils) coverage, not collision.
Whatever shop you use, get the warranty terms in writing: what is covered, for how long, and what to do if you spot something. Written terms settle questions that memory cannot.
If you do think a repaired spot is showing, make the conversation easy:
- Photograph it in the light where you see it. If it only shows in low evening sun, take the photo in low evening sun.
- Note when you first noticed it, and whether anything happened to the car around then (a storm, a tight parking spot, a car wash).
- Bring the written list of what was repaired, so everyone is looking at the same panel.
That turns "I think it came back" into a question a technician can answer quickly, which is what you want.
PDR or a body shop: which lasts better?
Both can last. The difference is what you have afterwards.
- After PDR, the panel has its original metal shape and its original factory paint.
- After a body shop repair, the panel has filler and new paint over the original metal, and the new paint has to match the old.
That matters most at resale, when a buyer or appraiser checks paint thickness. The full comparison is in PDR versus a body shop.
Not sure a repair held? Get it looked at
If you are looking at a panel and wondering whether a dent came back, a technician can usually tell whether it is unfinished work, new damage or just the light. Book a free 30-minute scan at the shop in SE Calgary, or send a few photos taken at a low angle with light running across the panel. If the original repair was done here, mention it when you book.
