Most people searching this have one dent, not a hailstorm. A shopping cart found your door, someone reversed into your bumper, or a stray rock left a crater in the hood. You want one number, not a lecture.
Here is the honest version: in Calgary, most single dents with intact paint cost $150 to $500 to fix properly with paintless dent repair. Below is what moves you within that range, and the one factor that surprises almost everyone.
Dent repair cost in Calgary, by dent
These are the ranges we quote on everyday Calgary vehicles, assuming the paint is not cracked.
Small dent repair cost
A small door ding (dime to nickel sized, shallow, on a flat panel) runs roughly $150 to $250.
Car door dent repair cost
Doors are among the easiest panels to reach from behind. A medium dent (loonie to toonie sized, or a shallow dent the size of your palm) runs roughly $250 to $400, and a door ding sits in the small-dent range above.
Large or creased dent cost
A large or creased dent (longer than your hand, or a sharp crease rather than a round dimple) runs roughly $400 to $800.
PDR cost per dent
Paintless dent repair is not really priced per dent once there is more than one. Multiple dents on one panel are priced as a panel, not one by one, so three dings on the same door cost far less than three times one ding.
If your paint is cracked or chipped at the dent, none of these apply. That is a different repair, and we will say so rather than quote you a number we cannot hold.
Size matters less than you think
Everyone assumes the price tracks the size of the dent. It tracks access more than size.
Paintless dent repair works by pushing the metal back from behind the panel. So the real question is not how big the dent is, it is how hard it is to reach the back of it. A dent in the middle of a door skin is an open shot. The same dent on a roof rail, a double-walled tailgate, or a brace-backed quarter panel can mean removing trim, liners, or lights to get a tool behind it.
- Easy access (door skins, hood centres, most fenders): quickest and cheapest.
- Restricted access (roof rails, pillars, panel edges, tailgates): more labour, higher price.
- Sealed or braced areas: sometimes cannot be reached at all, which pushes the panel toward conventional repair.
Two identical dents on the same car can price 3x apart based purely on which panel they landed on. That is why an honest quote needs a photo or a look, not just "how big is it."
Three other things move the number: sharpness (a crease costs more than a round dimple of the same size), body line proximity (a dent sitting on a styling crease is harder to release cleanly), and panel material (aluminum holds its shape more stubbornly than steel and takes longer to work).
Dent repair versus a body shop
For a dent with intact paint, this is rarely a close contest.
- Paintless dent repair: typically $150 to $500 per dent, no paint booth involved, and your factory paint is never touched.
- Conventional body shop repair: filler, sanding, primer, paint, and blending into adjacent panels. Commonly $500 to $1,500 or more for a single panel, usually several days, and the panel now wears aftermarket paint.
That last point costs you twice. Factory paint is applied and cured in conditions no shop can reproduce, and a resprayed panel is a permanent note on the car. It shows up in a paint-depth reading at trade-in, and it can shave real money off resale value on a newer vehicle.
A body shop is genuinely the right call when the paint is cracked, the metal is torn or stretched, or the damage sits on an edge with no access behind it. We will tell you when that is the case. We would rather send you somewhere honest than take a job PDR cannot finish properly. There is a fuller comparison in paintless dent repair versus a traditional body shop.
Should you claim it on insurance?
For one dent, almost never.
Your comprehensive deductible in Alberta is typically $500 to $1,000. If your repair costs $250, claiming it gets you nothing, you pay the whole thing anyway and you have put a claim on your record for no benefit. Pay out of pocket, keep your history clean.
The math flips when the damage is spread across several panels, or when a storm hit the whole vehicle. That is when the repair total clears your deductible by enough to be worth claiming. If you are in that situation, how hail insurance claims work in Alberta walks through the whole process.
What a real quote needs
Pricing for non-hail work, and the panels where paintless repair stops being the right answer, are laid out on our Calgary dent repair page.
Anyone who gives you a firm price over the phone without seeing the dent is guessing. To quote accurately we need to know:
- Which panel the dent is on, and roughly where.
- How big it is, held against something known like a coin or your hand.
- Whether the paint is broken, cracked, or chipped anywhere in the dent.
- The vehicle, since panel access varies enormously between a sedan, a truck, and an SUV.
A photo taken at a low angle with light reflecting across the panel tells us more than any description. Straight-on photos hide dents almost completely.
