After a Calgary hailstorm you have two roads in front of you: paintless dent repair, or a traditional body shop. They are very different repairs, and picking the wrong one can cost you real money and real resale value.
We do PDR for a living, so you would expect us to say PDR every time. We will not. Here is the honest breakdown, including the cases where a body shop genuinely is the right call.
How the two repairs actually work
Paintless dent repair (PDR) works each dent out from behind the panel with specialized rods and precise lighting. The metal gets massaged back to its original shape. No fillers, no sanding, no body putty, and critically, no repainting. Your factory paint never gets touched.
The body shop route is the conventional fix: filler in the dents or full panel replacement, then sanding, priming, and a respray of every affected panel. On a hail-peppered vehicle that can mean repainting the hood, the roof, and multiple doors.
Why factory paint is worth protecting
Your vehicle left the factory with a finish baked on in conditions no shop can fully replicate: electrostatic application, precise thicknesses, oven-cured at temperatures that would melt the plastics on an assembled car. That finish is the single best corrosion protection your vehicle will ever have.
A respray can look great on day one. But it is still an aftermarket finish:
- Colour match is an approximation. Modern metallics and tri-coats are notoriously hard to match. Alberta sun has already shifted your original paint, which makes it harder still.
- Resprayed panels can show up at resale. Appraisers and dealers check paint depth in seconds with a gauge. Non-original paint invites the question every seller hates: "what happened to this car?"
- Durability is different. Aftermarket paint is generally more prone to chips and fade than a factory bake, which matters plenty on Alberta highways in winter.
PDR sidesteps all of it. The paint that left the factory is the paint you drive home on. That is also why insurers like PDR: it costs them less than replace-and-respray, so it is the repair they prefer to approve.
Speed, while we are being practical
A typical hail PDR job takes days. A multi-panel body shop respray after a big storm can take weeks, especially when every shop in the city is buried after a storm and parts are on back order. If you are in a rental on your own dime, that difference is not small. For what a repair actually costs either way, see how much hail damage repair costs in Calgary.
When a body shop actually is the right call
Here is the part most PDR shops will not put in writing. PDR has limits, and pretending otherwise wastes your time:
- The paint is already broken. If hailstones cracked or chipped the paint down to the metal, repainting is required. PDR cannot fix broken paint.
- The metal is stretched or torn. Giant hail can stretch steel and aluminum past the point where it can be massaged back true.
- Damage sits on hard edges or braces. Dents on tight body lines or directly over internal bracing sometimes cannot be fully accessed from behind.
- Replacement is simply cheaper. On a badly destroyed roof or hood, swapping the panel can beat hours of dent work. A good estimator does that math instead of forcing the job.
- Broken glass and trim. Shattered sunroofs, cracked mouldings, and destroyed trim get replaced, not massaged. We coordinate that as part of the claim.
Most Calgary hail damage, though, is exactly what PDR was built for: dozens to hundreds of shallow, round dents in otherwise healthy paint.
How we call it at Hail Yeah
Every vehicle starts with a proper inspection. We check every panel under proper lighting and tell you straight which route the damage calls for, panel by panel. If part of the job genuinely needs paint or replacement, we say so and we coordinate it inside the same insurance claim, which we handle start to finish. Everything we repair with PDR is backed by a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle.
No guesswork, no pressure, no runaround. The fastest way to see where your car stands is the 3-minute estimate: answer a few questions and get your repair range, free and with no obligation.
